Saudi visual art constitutes a cornerstone of the Kingdom's cultural landscape. Characterized by its diversity and the succession of generations, it is an art form defined by exploration, discovery, and experimentation. It transcends mere color application on canvas, utilizing various artistic elements and movements to express the Saudi people, the atmosphere of the Kingdom, and its historical and civilizational transformations. The scene features pioneering figures who established the art form between the 1960s and the 1980s. The exhibition "Beginnings: The Origins of the Saudi Art Movement" celebrates these pivotal figures who shaped the modern art movement; they established aesthetic values and paved the way for new generations to create art spanning diverse spaces and schools. To document these foundational artistic beginnings, the Visual Arts Commission organized an exhibition titled "Beginnings: The Origins of the Saudi Visual Art Movement." Running from January 27, 2024, to April 11, 2026, at the National Museum of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh, the exhibition documents the trajectory of visual art in the Kingdom (1960–1980). It showcases 250 artworks by 73 artists, highlighting the influence of the pioneering generation on modern visual art. The exhibition’s central theme focuses on documenting the emergence and evolution of modern Saudi art and highlighting the works of the pioneering generation and educational institutions. It is divided into three main sections focusing on the foundations of modernism, individual and institutional initiatives, and the intellectual issues that shaped the art scene. It also highlights the works of artists such as Abdulhalim Radwi, Mohammed Al-Saleem, Munira Mosly, and Safeya Binzagr, as well as Abdullah Al-Sheikh, Ali Al-Razziza, and Fahad Al-Hujailan. According to the Visual Arts Commission’s website (https://visualarts.moc.v.sa/Initiatives/Bedayat-Exhibition), the exhibition presents a comprehensive journey through the origins and evolution of the Kingdom’s art scene. It showcases diverse artworks and rare pieces displayed for the first time, alongside newly discovered archival materials. These elements draw upon an in-depth research project conducted by the Visual Arts Commission—involving field visits, artist interviews, and documentation and archiving efforts—to illustrate how the pioneering generation contributed to developing distinctive visual languages and building an integrated art ecosystem through emerging networks and joint initiatives supported by both the public and private sectors. The exhibition also features a public program comprising lectures, workshops, and specialized training sessions hosted by experts to discuss the foundations of art education in Saudi Arabia, the influence of early educators and art institutions, and practices regarding the preservation of art archives.
