Hala Al-Kouatly Explores the Nuances of Passion Through the Narrative of Poetry
Through dense poetic and narrative explorations, Saudi poet Hala Al-Jiroudi frequently takes flight into realms of writing that blend poetry and prose. Her writing does not rely on a single mode of expression, but rather on a shared rhetoric in which the poetic and prose dimensions complement one another. Through this approach, poetic sentences unfold across a broader space, expanding the possibilities of imagery and allowing it to embrace the details of everyday life, observed reality, and imagination, transforming ordinary things into vivid and richly layered poetic scenes.
In her first book, Folds of Love, Hala Al-Jiroudi demonstrates a clear awareness of the poetic self. At times, she turns toward clarity and exposition; at others, toward symbolism. Through this interplay, she presents a diverse collection of harmonious texts. The publisher describes her writing in the following words: "Every phrase within the pages of this book is a mirror reflecting the features of longing and the calm that follows the storm. Her pen sometimes glows and at other times trembles—not because the thought is lacking, but because the twists and turns of love's paths have left her uncertain in her decisions. She soars, or perhaps descends, awaiting the navigation orders dictated by circumstances."
The poetry-and-prose collection, published by Kayan Publishing House, contains 19 texts, including Chapters of the Impossible, Hoping, That Place, Cities of Love, A Fragment of Memory, Beyond the Letter, Caravans of Love, This Statement, and Gardens of Hope, among others.
Among the passages in the book:
He descended upon my planet with his words
and persuasion seeped into my stations
but he did not realize that
the depth of thought lies in the length of the distance.
..
I became a stranger to myself
Those few hours were enough
to turn my compass
toward his harbor.
..
I can no longer bear
the beating of the drums of the past
I carry only a little
of the seedlings of patience
and always cast the nets of forgetfulness
to renew what can no longer be endured.
