A Dialogue of Green, Blue, and Pink: Ola Hijazi’s Visual Art World Shines at the Intersection of Chromatic Beauty and the Childlike Essence of Objects.

Saudi visual artist Ola Hijazi consistently emphasizes the spontaneous, innate quality of her paintings. Throughout a career spanning nearly three decades, she has remained true to a vision that beautifies time by recapturing the "childhood" of objects. She evokes a sense of profound wonder in the viewer, rooted in the interplay of bold, bright—and at times vibrant—colors. The presence of red, pink, green, blue, and yellow—fundamental colors in the world of visual art—is a constant in her work, creating a distinctive and enduring artistic style. Her focus on themes of childhood imbues her canvases with innocence, wonder, and a playful artistic spirit. Hijazi frequently depicts small houses, children's toys, and young faces, highlighting the vitality of the childhood experience; she also paints nature scenes, horses, and gardens, often setting the sea as a backdrop. It is as if she is composing a visual symphony of nature, employing rhythmic color patterns across her works. Her compositions often feature motifs such as young girls dressed as brides, dolls, young girls in various dresses, flowers, school supplies, letters, and mathematical symbols; she either combines these elements into complex compositions or utilizes them as recurring visual motifs across different paintings. In addition to her work as a visual artist, Ola Hijazi is an educator; she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Arabic Language (specializing in literature and rhetoric) and a diploma in educational psychology, and has completed courses in printmaking at Kensington and Chelsea College in London. Ola Hijazi has held eight solo exhibitions in Riyadh, Paris, and Abu Dhabi, in addition to participating in numerous group exhibitions, forums, and art workshops; she has also represented the Kingdom at many art gatherings across the Arab world and beyond. She has won numerous awards, and her works are held in the collections of the Museum of Islamic Art in Malaysia, the Amsterdam Museum, and others. Her exhibition history includes "Color Spaces" (Alexandria, 2003), the "Agenda" exhibition at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (2009 and 2011), and the Qatar Art Symposium (2011), among others. Since 2002, she has received various honors, including the Abha Cultural Award, the Saudi Arabian Airlines "Malwan" Award, a recognition award from MBC, the General Presidency of Youth Welfare’s Acquisition Award (2004), and awards from the Saudi Female Artists Competition, the Al-Kharafi Contemporary Art Biennale (Kuwait), the Al-Safeer Competition, the Luxor Painting Symposium (second edition), and the Gulf Female Artists Forum (Muscat). She also won first prize at the Qatar Art Symposium (held during the Second Qatar Marine Festival), among other accolades. Ola Hijazi’s artistic world embraces diverse human experiences and life stages—particularly the formative period of childhood, when one first begins to perceive life and reality. Her work captures the innocence of discovering the world, the initial sensory encounter with color, and the first awakening of awareness regarding the memory of objects and their myriad details, both large and small.
