Areas of Saudi Cultural Innovation: From the Visual and Cognitive to the Creative Industries

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is experiencing a diverse wave of creative activity across the many spaces shaped by modern technologies and the media age. This transformation has renewed interest in a wide range of cultural elements, whether those connected to heritage and the historical roots of creativity or those intertwined with contemporary cultural and creative achievements. Cultural innovation in the Kingdom represents a key pillar of the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, seeking to transform heritage and the arts into thriving economic sectors through several major fields. Most of these fields draw on an important cultural blend that distinguishes Saudi Arabia regionally and globally: the Kingdom embraces its Arab and Islamic heritage while also engaging with contemporary cultural questions aimed at expanding the scope of its cultural activity and strengthening its presence internationally.

Contemporary Fields:

Among the most prominent fields of cultural innovation are the creative industries and filmmaking, including support for film and theater production and the provision of incubation programs such as the Film Accelerator, designed to empower startups in the sector. Another important area is the integration of technology with heritage, including the use of artificial intelligence and virtual reality to document archaeological sites, the creation and design of virtual exhibitions, and the development of video games inspired by Saudi history and civilization.

Cultural innovators can also develop traditional crafts such as textiles and Al-Sadu weaving by connecting them with specific technological applications or integrating them with other artistic forms, such as engraving and ornamentation.

In the visual arts and music, modern spaces and specialized institutes can be established to support music and the arts, alongside contemporary art and photography. In architecture and design, innovation can take the form of architectural and urban designs that combine authenticity with modernity, while developing public spaces to enhance the urban landscape. In traditional crafts and Arabic calligraphy, traditional crafts and manuscripts can be transformed into innovative contemporary products with significant commercial value.

Culture Across Generations

The Ministry of Culture has selected “Culture Across Generations” as the theme of the 2026 Cultural Innovation Challenge. The initiative brings together creators and innovators to compete in developing cultural innovations that respond to the theme and objectives of this year's challenge.

The Ministry invited everyone interested in participating to submit their innovative ideas aimed at serving Saudi culture through the Future Window platform at:

https://www.moc.gov.sa/modules/pages/initiative/OpenFutures.

According to the Ministry of Culture's website, the challenge proceeds through several stages. It begins with an evaluation of submitted ideas based on specific criteria, including cultural impact, feasibility, implementability, sustainability, inclusiveness, and the potential reach of the idea. A specialized committee evaluates the quality, feasibility, and potential impact of each proposal within the cultural sector. If an idea passes the initial evaluation stage, its creators are invited to participate in an “Innovation” workshop focused on creative thinking and idea generation. The workshop aims to deepen and refine the concept and explore its cultural and innovative dimensions through a collaborative process. This is followed by a stage dedicated to developing the idea and preparing a feasibility study, after which the proposal is presented in a simplified format, followed by feedback and final approval. The process then moves to a final review and evaluation, culminating in the final presentation.

Innovators participating in the challenge also receive several benefits, including support in developing their ideas and preparing feasibility studies, as well as the opportunity to present their concepts to decision-makers while ensuring protection of the innovator's intellectual property.

The Cultural Innovation Challenge forms part of the Ministry of Culture's broader efforts to involve society in shaping the Saudi cultural landscape and empower innovators to play an active role in building the future of culture in the Kingdom. It also seeks to encourage participants to develop innovative cultural solutions and generate creative ideas that contribute to achieving the objectives of the National Culture Strategy under the umbrella of Saudi Vision 2030.
