Saudi Folkloric Material Heritage: Among the Publications of the King Abdulaziz Public Library for Children
King Abdulaziz Public Library in Riyadh has published a diverse collection of children’s books and stories exploring several Saudi handicrafts that represent an important aspect of the Kingdom’s traditional material heritage. These publications are part of an active partnership between Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University and King Abdulaziz Public Library, as part of programs aimed at developing the general cultural awareness of Saudi children.
Among the titles published by the library are Drawing and Decorating Ceramics and Pottery, prepared by Ola Al-Madani; The Craft of Making Prayer Beads, The Craft of Palm-Leaf Weaving, and Making Incense Burners, prepared by Rahaf Al-Zahrani; and The Craft of Decorative Painting and Coloring on Wooden and Wall Surfaces and Hand Decoration and Printing on Textiles, prepared by Maha Al-Badr. All illustrations for the books and stories were designed by artist Sarah Abdullah Al-Shahri.
In The Craft of Palm-Leaf Weaving, an art deeply rooted in Saudi heritage that combines authenticity and creativity, children are introduced to the craft through an overview of its history, the steps involved in making palm-leaf products, and the differences between handmade and industrial production. They also learn the basics of palm-leaf weaving, a craft closely associated with date palms. Since ancient times, people in Saudi Arabia have relied on palm fronds to make essential household items such as baskets, mats, fans, and hats. The book also introduces children to environmental awareness and sustainability.
In Drawing and Decorating Ceramics and Pottery, children learn about the steps involved in making pottery and its importance in developing artistic skills and strengthening their connection to heritage. They are also introduced to various decorative techniques, including hand engraving, painting with natural colors, block printing, and glazing. Several regions of the Kingdom have become known for pottery production, including Al-Ahsa, Najran, Al-Qassim, and Tabuk. Pottery production begins with preparing the clay, followed by shaping, drying, firing in a kiln, and finally decorating and coloring.
The book The Craft of Decorative Painting and Coloring on Wooden and Wall Surfaces explains that decorating wood and walls involves several stages: preparing the surface, drawing the design, coloring and outlining, engraving or carving, adding decorative elements and embellishments, and finally applying protection and finishing.
Through its publishing program, King Abdulaziz Public Library seeks to publish children’s books, enrich the Arabic children’s library, and support and encourage children’s book authors and illustrators in Saudi Arabia and across the Arab world. The program also aims to bring successful international experiences to the Arab world by translating them under the supervision of a specialized committee focused on children’s literature and culture
